Late in 2019, Portland Bolt was asked to help aid a cutting-edge science experiment. The aptly named Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a collaboration between the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) in Batavia, IL and Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) 800 miles away in Lead, SD. The goal of the experiment is to study the nature and properties of neutrinos, one of the fundamental building blocks of the universe. By shooting a neutrino beam made of 99.9% muon neutrinos underground from the LBNF to the SURF, scientists hope to learn more about the origins of matter, black hole formation, and other fundamental scientific concepts.
Portland Bolt manufactured F1554 Grade 105 headed anchor bolt assemblies (including anchor sleeves) for construction at the SURF. Portland Bolt was able to manufacture the custom high-strength anchor bolts in our 140,000 square foot facility. We were also able to work around site closures due to year-end holidays.
